Plasma cutting is part of the thermal processes of cutting by fusion. It is mainly used to cut conductive metals, ideal for steel.
Plasma is an electro conductive gas that is heated to high temperatures. The gas is made up of ionized particles; that is, groups of positively and negatively charged particles. The heat generated in the process can reach temperatures of over 20,000ºC, while the plasma jet from the nozzle can approach speeds close to the speed of sound.
The cutting process is based on the thermal and mechanical action of a jet of gas heated by a direct current electric arc established between an electrode located on the torch and the part to be machined. The plasma jet launched against the piece penetrates the entire thickness to be cut, melting and expelling the material.
